John and Della May Freytag Day
Friday, September 10, 1999WHEREAS, The Village of Oak Harbor has a continuing sense of gratitude for our citizens who make major contributions to the education of our children and who enrich our lives through the performing music arts; and,
WHEREAS, we furthermore recognize educators who, incidental to their teaching activities, infuse the community with their gallant citizenship and model of marital teaching teamwork and music performing and additional community volunteer activities; and,
WHEREAS, such a marital team of John and Della May Freytag lived in our community from 1952 through 1967 and, along with their daughters, Martha and Melinda, imbued an appreciation of music to the community, and showed how teamwork, diligence, persistence, and courage could lead to wonderful football game marching band performances, to dance band, glee club, and concert excellence at district and state competitions; and,
WHEREAS, prior to their move to our community, they contributed to our country's war effort in the military at The Presidio, San Francisco, where they participated for many troop ship arrivals and debarkations, military concerts, U.S.O. dances, ship launchings, parades, Voice of America broadcasts, hospitals, other military functions; and at war's conclusion, for President Harry Truman and representatives of the then new United Nations; and,
WHEREAS, after their departure from our community, they served as lay ministers in Toledo, then taught band and orchestral instrumental music at Medina City Schools to Grades 4 through 12; and,
WHEREAS, they have been enjoying retirement with Della May playing viola in the Wooster Symphony Orchestra and John continuing some music activities and lots of woodworking; and,
WHEREAS, the children of John's and Della May's students are now participating in Oak Harbor bands and orchestra under the direction of current music director, Terry Robb, and continue to experience the influence of John and Della May through the customs exemplified by a keen tradition and the stories of their parents, aunts, and uncles; and,
NOW THEREFORE, I, Peter J. Macko, Mayor of the Village of Oak Harbor, Ohio, in recognition of the tremendous contributions to students and residents of the Village, surrounding Ottawa County, and neighboring communities, do hereby proclaim Friday, September 10, 1999, as John and Della May Freytag Day in Oak Harbor, and ask that the entire community join with me in congratulating the Freytags for their many educational and artistic accomplishments before, during, and after their tenure in our village from 1952 through 1967 and the lasting impact they have made upon two generations of residents.
