AIDS 10-Kilometer Walkathon

Our classmate, Marilyn Steindam Palmer, and her husband, Doug, participated in an AIDS 10-kilometer walkathon the third Sunday in July 1998. They're going to repeat in a week for 1999. Last year, more than 27,000 friends, neighbors, community leaders, and celebrities joined together to raise urgently needed funds, and to send the message to the world that the AIDS crisis is not over. At the concluding ceremony at 3:30 PM, $3,602,178 had been collected, setting a new record in the twelve-year history of the walkathon. Those classmates who are concerned about AIDS and HIV, but don't have occasion in their communities to participate in fund raising efforts for these causes, are invited to pledge money to Marilyn's efforts: $0.50 per kilometer would yield $5 for the cause, $1.00/km would be an even $10.00, $2.00/km would be a $20-spot. She has forms to record your contributions and to submit addtional ones retroactively if received after Sunday morning. Marilyn and Doug walked under the auspices of their parish in the East Bay, Church of the Good Shepherd. 86 walkers from their church left Pittsburg that Sunday at 7 AM PDT via two charter buses and joined the activities at Golden Gate Park at 9 AM. They turned in a cumulative $7,200 in donations. This year, there are over 100 parishioners from their church registered to walk. Their goal is to exceed $10,000 in contributions. Their parish participates under the umbrella of Catholic Charities of the East Bay Coalition, which placed 15th last year in total raised funds and, in recognition of its many walkers and money-raising performance, has been given a large team spot in Sharon Meadow, Golden Gate Park, by which to organize itself prior to the walk and to partake in a group picnic lunch afterward.
